The system has an electromotor (14) operating a water pump (12) in an internal combustion engine (10). A controller generates a heat exchanger flow request signal as function of a climate heat load value and coolant temperature. A signal for adjustment of pumping flow rate is supplied to the electromotor for fulfillment of a heat exchanger flow request. The climate heat load value is based on an inner space set value and ambient air temperature. A thermal sensor (34) detects the temperature of the coolant at an inlet to a heat exchanger (32).
