The method involves determining the target compression ratio of an internal combustion engine in a normal operating mode, depending on an operation parameter of internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is operated in prediction mode and the target compression ratio is determined using expected size estimation operating variable which is estimated based on the current gradient of operating parameter over time. An independent claim is included for an internal combustion engine.
