The method involves leading an analyte or a mixture of multiple analytes into an injection area of an ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), where an IMS-spectrum of these analytes or analyte mixture is incorporated in the detection of the IMS. A time-dependent reference series of IMS spectra of the gases or gas mixture of known identity is incorporated in the detection area of the IMS, where peaks and parameters characterizing and depicting the peak for its position are determined and normalized from each IMS-reference spectrum of the reference-measuring series. The pattern recognition is executed with the reduced reference spectrum in the measuring phase.
