The method involves applying a laser pulse to a surface of a ceramic thermal barrier layer i.e. zirconia layer (16), overlying a substrate (10), and searching for an image representative of an area of possible separation between the ceramic layer and the substrate. A detected image is analyzed. An absorption layer (22) and a containment layer (24) are applied to the surface of the barrier layer. The image is visualized optically in the form of a spot visible at the surface of the barrier layer.
