PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monomer composition suitable for producing a conductive polymer that inhibits negative effects associated with possible increasing concentration of an oxidant/dopant solution and that can provide a solid electrolytic capacitor having low ESR and a large electrostatic capacity, and also to provide a solid electrolytic capacitor having the above properties using the conductive polymer.;SOLUTION: The monomer composition for producing a conductive polymer is formed by adding 1.5-20% by mass of a compound having a sulfoxide group to thiophen or its derivatives. Then, an oxidant/dopant solution of high concentration made available by the formation is used to subject thiophen or its derivatives contained in the monomer composition to oxidative polymerization so as to produce the conductive polymer.
