A system (100) is described for individually manipulating, e.g. orienting, a particle (104) in a fluid (106). The manipulating system (100) comprises a particle trapping system (111) allowing trapping of the particle (111) in a fluid channel (102) and a controller for controlling shear force gradients on the particle.
