The method involves recording frequencies of measuring beam (6) over time relative to known frequency progression over time as received signal. The change of predetermined kind in received signal is used for detecting wheel (1) of vehicle (2). The duration of passage of vehicle passing the detector unit (5') is computed based on length information of vehicle read from onboard unit (15) and speed of vehicle. The time window in received signal is determined and compensated by spurious signal component before detection of wheel is completed.
