This invention relates to a method for vehicle number plate detection and recognition using level crossings. It includes a process of detection of a number plate from the front view of the vehicle, extraction of the characters and recognition comprising of steps of number plate localization 3, character extraction 4 and character recognition 5. For localization of the number plate, the number plates are detected based on the color which can be either yellow or white for vehicles in India. The characters are extracted using specialized technique and then recognized based on template matching. Figure 1
