The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing alumina-based abrasive grains for abrasive material, and to alumina-based abrasive grains for abrasive material manufactured thereby, the method comprising: a step of preparing boehmite powder and an active alumina powder as starting materials; a step of wet-mixing the boehmite powder, the active alumina powder, a solvent, and a peptizing agent so as to form a sol; a step of heating the sol at a first temperature higher than room temperature and lower than the boiling point of the solvent, and stirring so as to prevent precipitation; a step of heating the sol at a second temperature higher than the first temperature when the viscosity thereof becomes greater and the sol becomes pasty, so as to form a gel; a step of mixing the gel with an organic solvent and performing wet- pulverization; a step of drying the wet-pulverized gel and forming a powder; a step of mixing a binder and a solvent into the resultant dried powder and performing forming; a step of calcining the formed resu a step of dry-pulverizing the calcined resu and a step of sintering the active alumina and boehmite contained in the dry-pulverized result so as to convert same into an α-Al2O3 crystalline phase. According to the present invention, boehmite powder and an active alumina powder can be used to manufacture alumina-based abrasive grains for abrasive material, which are compact, which have a high degree of hardness, and which exhibit high purity.
