PURPOSE: A composition containing Ardisia tinctoria Pit. extract or a fraction thereof is provided to remarkably lower the amount of cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-1 beta and to prevent and treat inflammatory diseases. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating inflammatory diseases contains Ardisia tinctoria Pit. extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. Ardisia tinctoria Pit. is extracted using water, low carbon number alcohol of C1-C2, or a mixture thereof. The fraction is an ethyl acetate fraction. An external use skin formulation, a cosmetic composition, or a health food for preventing and treating inflammatory diseases contains the extract or fraction as an active ingredient.
