The source has an anode (10) and a cathode (20) performing a discharging process. A discharge gas inlet (12) and a discharge gas outlet (15) are provided from the anode to the cathode. Discharge edges have a minimum required distance relative to each other. An ionization unit includes a ceramic or cement casing (2), a coaxial high voltage cable (3) and a discharge chamber (4) engaged in an ion transfer capillary (6). A physical separation between the chamber and a capillary gas flow (1) is carried out by adjusting a pressure in the chamber to a static pressure of the flow.
