The method involves determining a waiting time, after which the nitrogen oxide concentration has a determined threshold value after switching an internal combustion engine. The nitrogen oxide concentration is present at the position of the nitrogen oxide sensor. A zero-point difference of the nitrogen oxide sensor is determined by watching the waiting time after switching of the internal combustion engine. A signal supplied from the nitrogen oxide sensor is detected and the zero-point difference is determined from the signal. An independent claim is included for an internal combustion engine with a waiting time determination unit.
