The method involves determining total value according to a deactivation of an internal combustion engine (10) based on a mathematical function, which describes a change of a parameter e.g. level, volume or mass, characterizing an amount of lubricant (20) in a lubricant reservoir (18) of the internal combustion engine due to flowing of the lubricant into the lubricant reservoir according to deactivation.
