The method involves illuminating a sample (2) with light pulses (L) of a pulse rate. Phase difference values of a sample light (P) are recorded by a runtime camera (4) with a photon mixing device (PMD) sensor (4.1), where the sample light is spectrally splitted on a dispersive element (9) i.e. holographic grating. The camera is synchronized with the light pulses. The sample is illuminated with another pulse rate that is different from the former pulse rate. Other phase difference values of the sample light are recorded. A material characteristic is determined based on the difference values. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining a material characteristic of a sample (2) an object (3) a control unit or control program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for determining a material characteristic of a sample.
