The method involves determining the current driving speed (V-ist) of the motor vehicle (10) and determining a point on the driving route (12), on which the motor vehicle must have a predetermined speed. The predicted rolling speed of the motor vehicle at the determined location is determined on the basis of the freewheeling curve of the motor vehicle. A speed difference between the rolling speed and the target speed (V-soll) is determined, and a freewheeling signal is outputted for freewheeling if the speed difference lies within a predetermined tolerance range around the target speed.
