The cooling system (1) has a cooling water circuit, where the flow of cooling water in the cooling water circuit is blocked or released by a switching valve (8). The switching valve is arranged in a housing of an internal combustion engine (2). The cooling water circuit has a cooling water supply channel (6), a cooling water jacket (5) and a connection between the cooling water supply channel and the cooling water jacket. The switching valve is made of plastic or metal.
