The method involves storing (S1) one or multiple example-based models in a vehicle computer, where the system response of the vehicle is described in a corresponding empirical principle for different events in the model. The system response of the vehicle is detected and evaluated (S2) by the vehicle computer when a new event occurs. An event value is generated (S3), which declares a similarity between the determined system response and the system responses held in the model for a comparable or identical event. The parameters of the determined system response that do not satisfy a given similarity criteria, are transferred (S4) to an external evaluator for processing, if the event value is assigned to a state category that represents a lower similarity of the determined system response and the system responses in the model. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program product with software code sections for operating a vehicle; and (2) a device for operating a vehicle.
