The switch arrangement (11) has a low voltage potential switch (28) and a high voltage potential switch (30) which are connected between input terminal ports (12,14) and an output terminal ports. The high voltage potential switch is associated with DC voltage source (16). A control unit (42) is provided to control the switches and to electrically connect and disconnect the electrical load (10) from DC power source. The control unit and/or switches are formed such that different large currents are produced using switches during opening and closing of the switches. An independent claim is included for method for operating switch arrangement.
