The device has a flameproof enclosure (10) that is provided with several viewing windows (12,14,16). A pivotable video camera (18) is arranged in the viewing windows. The flameproof enclosure is designed for mounting of the cap of a mine roof rack. The viewing windows are inclined with respect to a mounting base (20) of the flameproof enclosure. The viewing windows are trapezoidal on the lateral surfaces of a truncated pyramid. The flameproof enclosure is in the shape of a truncated pyramid. An independent claim is included for a method for monitoring a long wall underground extraction.
