The wiper device (10) has a wiping leaf (14) provided with a smart material element (12) for controlling and achieving movement and/or rigidity change. A setting unit (16) produces the movement and/or the rigidity change of the material element, and a field generation unit (18) sets a field on the material element, where the field is designed as electric field. The material element has an electroactive material, which is partially formed as an electroactive polymer. The setting unit sets the material element in oscillation. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a wiper device.
