The time-of-flight sensor (22) has a time-of-flight pixel (24) and multiple reference time-of-flight pixels (26) for receiving a modulated reference light. Two reference time-of-flight pixels are so formed or controlled that the reference time-of-flight pixels have different demodulation contrasts. The two reference time-of-flight pixels have different dimensioned modulation gates.
