The method involves arranging a sensor (2) for detecting the heart rate and another sensor (3) for detecting the load variations to the subject. A time window is defined, within which the change in load is detected after the detection of the signal correlating with a change in load of the subject. The heart rate intervals are determined within the time window by a data processing unit (4). A functional parameter is compared with a previously known parameter that is associated with a state of health of the subject, and the quality of the heart rate response is derived. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a measuring arrangement for determining the quality of the heart rate response during changes in load to a subject; and (2) a software program or a software program product for executing the method.
