The device (22) has two independently movable press dies (24, 26) by which pressure is applied on two stacks (14, 16) of battery cells (10) i.e. lithium ion cells, that are arranged on a reservoir (12). A detection unit e.g. camera (30) and a laser scanner, detects whether the first stack of the battery cell has a small height than the second stack of the battery cells. A control device (34) adjusts traverse paths of the press dies based on a signal of the detection unit. An energy storing unit comprises a drive unit and a generator for providing energy for operating the device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating of a press device (2) a method for manufacturing a battery.
