The element has a composite material (1) provided with a fiber-reinforced plastic layer (2) and two metal layers (3, 4). The metal layers are made of steel, where thickness of the metal layers is 0.1-1.5 mm and 0.1-1.0 mm and the element forms a part of cross beams of a vehicle. The plastic layer comprises a thermoplastic plastic, polyamide, polyethylene and blend of polyamide and polyethylene. Two half-shells are integrally and/or positively connected to the element. The half shells of the element are provided with a hat-shaped section and a flangeless open box section. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a structural element.
