Lithium (Li)-containing solution comprises: at least one metal ion A comprising zirconium, hafnium, niobium and tantalum, at least one metal ion B comprising barium, calcium, strontium, lanthanum, gadolinium or samarium and optionally at least one metal ion C comprising aluminum, iron, zinc or magnesium; and a solvent. A molar ratio of Li/B/A/C is 6-8:2.5-3.5:1.5-2.5:0-0.5. The solvent comprises a mixture of at least one 1-6C alcohol, at least one 3-10C-carboxylic acid and at least one 3-10C-alkoxycarboxylic acid. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process-I for producing a lithium-containing xerogel comprising drying the solution; (2) the xerogel prepared by the process-I; (3) a process-II for producing a lithium-containing composite oxide, comprising heating the xerogel at a temperature of greater than 300[deg] C, preferably greater than 500[deg] C, for at least 15 minutes, preferably at least 30 minutes; (4) the lithium-containing composite oxide prepared by the process-II; (5) a process-III for producing a crystalline lithium-containing composite oxide having a garnet-like structure, comprising calcining the lithium-containing composite oxide or the xerogel at a temperature of greater than 800[deg] C, preferably 1000[deg] C for at least 15 minutes, preferably at least 5 hours; and (6) the crystalline lithium-containing composite oxide having a garnet-like structure produced by the process-III, where the crystalline lithium-containing composite oxide is of formula (Li 7 - xLa 3Zr 2Fe xO 1 2). x : 0-0.5.
