Partial conversion of digested sludge (28) recovered by digestion process into a dry material, comprises partially dewatering the digested sludge, and converting the digested sludge by hydrothermal carbonization into the dry material. Independent claims are included for: (1) hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, comprising supplying the starting material to a reaction vessel or pressure tanks, and converting the starting material under pressure and elevated temperature by the hydrothermal carbonization into the dry material, where the starting material is digested sludge; (2) operating a wastewater treatment plant for treatment and/or clarification of waste water, comprising depositing and/or partially converting the digested sludge into the dry material by the hydrothermal carbonation; and (3) a plant for the treatment and/or clarification of waste water, comprising a device for the separation and/or conversion of sewage materials and/or impurities, preferably digested sludge, and a device for the hydrothermal carbonization of the sewage materials and/or impurities.
