The method involves displacing an automatic parking brake (APB) (1) into a service mode by an input of an appropriate command. An input device (2) i.e. keyboard, of the parking brake is actuated, and a brake piston of the parking brake is adjusted around a limited way, which is smaller than a maximum adjusting path. The parking brake is clamped by a single and/or repeated operation of the input device after completion of a service work and automatically delivered to an open position. The parking brake is loosened according to the input of the appropriate command in the service mode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an automatic parking brake for a vehicle with a control element (2) a control device.
