The device has an external exhaust gas recirculation circuit (20) coupled with an outlet manifold (8) at one end such that the circuit guides an exhaust gas flow selectively as exhaust gas recirculation flow into an inlet manifold (4) at another end. Inlet and outlet manifolds are coupled upstream and downstream to an internal combustion engine (6). The circuit comprises a heat exchanger device for cooling flow before entering the inlet manifold. A deposition filter (23) is coupled upstream of the exchanger device and intercepts incineration by-products in the flow. An independent claim is also included for a method for reducing contamination in an exhaust gas recirculation-cooling device.
