Forming a metal coating (10) on a surface of a thermoplastic substrate (9), comprises: increasing the surface roughness of the thermoplastic substrate by laser ablation; projecting metal particles to a porous surface of the thermoplastic substrate by cold gas dynamic spraying, so as to obtain, at the surface of the thermoplastic substrate, an intermediate layer comprising metallic particles located in the rough surface of the thermoplastic substrate; and depositing metal particles on the intermediate layer to form the metal coating. An independent claim is included for a composite material including a thermoplastic substrate and the metal coating.
