The device has a display comprising a first display zone (11) for displaying a data list and a second display zone (12) to display a set of alphanumeric symbols. A selection module of the symbols determines a filtered set of alphanumeric symbols in which each of the symbols is associated with an element of the list. A determination module determines subsets of alphanumeric symbols from the filtered set, so that the subsets are disjoined in pair. A selector (13) selects a subset to be displayed in the second zone, where the second zone displays only the symbols belonging to the selected subset. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a display and selection device.
