A personal safety communications system 100 includes user terminals 118a,118b,118c,122a,122b interconnected via networks 112,114. Alert management apparatus implemented in the user terminals, and server 102 comprises at least one user database by which certain users can be designated as guardians of other users. An alert initiation interface (fig.3) allows a first user to initiate an alert situation and to indicate their location. A guardian response interface (fig10a) provides designated or potential guardians of the first user, notification of the alert showing the location of the first user. The guardian indicates whether or not they will attend to assist the first user. A monitoring interface (fig10c) informs the first user of the identity and location of guardians who have indicated they will attend, without revealing the location of other users.
