Secure browser environment with restrictions on system resource access for data transfer outside the environment

Data to be viewed in a secure environment 114 is stored in a container 112 with programming for providing access to the data 116. The data is also is associated with at least one system resource access permission 118 for enforcing data transfer restrictions. Access to the data is provided following a request from a recipient system 102. The data access program is executed to establish a secure browser environment 122 on the recipient system, the secure browser providing access to the data. Requests made in the secure browser for transfer of the data outside the secure environment are evaluated against the system resource access permissions to see if the request is permitted. The data and the data access program may be stored remotely, and the execution of the environment carried out by the remote system. Evaluated requests may include transfer to/from a clipboard, transmission over a network, and sending data to a printer.
