Secure access to user data in cloud computing facilities via proxy authentication server

A plurality of proxy access credentials 310 for a user 302 is stored at proxy server 202 to allow secure access to each of a plurality of cloud computing facilities 204. A request is received from a client device 208 for access to one of the plurality of cloud computing facilities. A communication link to the client device is secured to provide a secure link through an interface 322. Access credentials 308, typically a username and password, are received from the user through the secure link. An identity of the user is verified with the access credentials. A security state 318 of the client device is assessed to determine if the client is in compliance with a security policy 320. If the client is in compliance with the security policy, the client is coupled to one of the plurality of cloud computing facilities over a second secure link through interface 324 using a corresponding one of the plurality of proxy access credentials for the user.
