PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful material and method by using waste of light-weight cellular concrete.SOLUTION: The invention provides: a culture solution for promoting propagation of diatoms, the culture solution comprising a granular siliceous material (e.g., a granular material consisting of waste of light weight cellular concrete) containing water and calcium silicate hydrate as main components, wherein the amount of the siliceous material is 0.001-2 pts.mass per 100 pts.mass of water; and a method for promoting propagation of diatoms, the method comprising adding, per 100 pts.mass of water, 0.001-2 pts.mass of a granular siliceous material containing calcium silicate hydrate as a main component, to diatom-containing solution that contains diatoms and water.
