Bacillus strains are (i) sensitive to ampicillin, vancomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol; (ii) E. coli and Clostridium perfringens perfringens); and (iii) characterized by a sporulation percentage of at least 80 as measured after 2 days in culture. The invention further relates to a method for selecting such strains. Many of the strains identified according to the present invention are of the species Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Some Bacillus amyloliquefaciens are further identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subspecies. Amiloliquefaciens, others are amyloliquefaciens ( amyloliquefaciens) subspecies. Identified as Plantarum. The Bacillus strain of the present invention can be used as a feed additive to animal feed when it has a probiotic effect.
