Dechlorination method of polychlorinated biphenyls and other chlorinated organic substances by irradiation

Chlorinated organic compounds particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is solubilized in an aqueous solution of ethoxylated alkylphenols (alkyl = octyl, or nonyl) with a number of ethylene oxide units in the range of 7-20 and the resultant solution at pH 5-12 is irradiated with accelerated electrons with an energy of 1 up to 5 MeV, preferably 4 MeV, dosage interval velocities 1E 10.sup.3.n.kGy / sec, preferably 10.sup.2.n.kGy / s doses 1-100 kGy.
