An improved and highly economical instrument for measuring velocity of detonation of various types has a plurality of keys and buttons for executing different functions of the instrument. The instrument has a high speed precision DSP controller, a temperature compensated clock generator and high frequency optocoupler. The temperature compensated clock generator having a tolerance of 2.5 pulses per million (ppm) is used for sourcing the main clock for time measurement resulting only a maximum error tolerance of 2.5 counts in one million counting. The clock bus reference is 40 MHz which gives a resolution of 25 nano second (ns) so that when the first input channel of AccuTime is triggered, time counter starts recording with an internal of 25 ns. The triggering of the second input stops the time counting so that time can be recorded at every 25 ns interval.
