A method for limiting the amount of energy lost in a friction clutch 13 drivingly coupling an engine 10 to a transmission 12 is disclosed, wherein a desired engine speed NT is set and the engine 10 is determined based on the set target engine speed NT is controlled. The target engine speed NT is not fixed, but is variable based at least in part on the engagement state of the clutch 13 to smoothly transfer the engine speed NE to the speed NI of an input to the transmission 12. When the clutch 13 is engaged, the target engine speed NT converges to an input speed NI of the transmission 12 to a value slightly above the input speed NI of the transmission 12.
