A drive-based pre-planning process for the energy consumption of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) enables a PHEV Driving-Oriented Energy Management Control (TEMC) to use scalable levels of available driving knowledge to augment the use of on-board energy (fuel and electricity) optimize. The pre-planning process generates an optimal battery state of charge (SOC) drainage profile for a given PHEV travel route. The pre-planning process may generate the battery SOC profile using a run-based dynamic programming (DP) algorithm. The TEMC controls the use of on-board energy according to the battery SOC profile optimized for the ride. The preplanning process uses normalized Space Propulsion Power Demand (SNDP) (or S-NDP) distributions in which each distribution set indicates a respective drive pattern. Ride knowledge is used to select the driving pattern that best represents the driving process for the ride.
