PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate answers to questions based on a corpus of usable evidence.SOLUTION: A computer-based question-answering system 100 includes a computer-processable definition of a region in a data set. The system is configured to: identify the region of the data set on the basis of the definition of the region; provide a question and an output representing the identified region of the data set to a user; automatically generate an answer to the question on the basis of the question and the data set; provide an output representing the answer to the user; generate the answer based on a subset of the data set; and provide an output representing the subset of the data set to the user. The user can provide feedback about a first answer to the system, and the system is configured to use the feedback for improving subsequent answers to the same and other questions, and for disabling an automatic question-answering function of the system in response to disagreement between the user and the system.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
