The present invention generally relates to medical devices and methods. More specifically, the present invention relates to a system and method for optically scanning the inner surface of a body lumen and generating digital dimensional information about the lumen surface. A digital topographic model of the luminal surface is generated by projecting a light pattern onto the luminal surface from a first location within the lumen. At least a portion of the projection pattern is detected from a second location in the lumen that is based on a location remote from the first location. The lumen wall dimensions can be measured by triangulation to generate a digital topography model of the body lumen.
