Means have been developed to direct nucleation and crystal growth, and these stages of crystallization are affected by the surface energy modification of the amorphous substrate. The surface energy of the substrate affects the contact angle, linear tension, wettability and energy of interaction with the supersaturated solution, and these factors are important in crystallization. The use of an amorphous substrate enhances, inhibits, or benefits the surface energy of nucleation from supersaturated solutions, crystal growth or crystallization in thermodynamic, kinetic or a combination of both.
