PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting risks of progressing to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer in patients infected by hepatitis C virus (HCV), and to provide a guide for positively selecting a preventive treatment in patients infected by hepatitis C virus.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for detecting risks of liver cancer comprising detection of variation of arginine on a position of seventieth in an amino acid sequence of HCV core region contained in a sample collected from a human infected by genotype 1b HCV, and chronologically quantifying the variation on the same human, wherein comparing the quantitative value with the quantitative value of just before and in the case of increasing the variation means a signal of transfer into liver cancer.
