The present invention relates to a method for converting a complex precatalyst into an active complex catalyst. The complex pre-catalyst and the active complex catalyst include a water-insoluble optically active ligand and a ruthenium atom, and the active complex catalyst further includes a monohydride and a water molecule. The method includes the step of adding water as an activating solvent system having a pH equal to or lower than 2, and dissolving the complex precatalyst, acid, and hydrogen. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for producing a catalyst composition, in which a substrate molecule and a reaction mixture are hydrogenated. [Selection figure] None
