PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inter-word space detection device capable of, even when a font used for a character string of language in which a space is included between adjacent words is unknown, detecting the space between the words.SOLUTION: An inter-word space detection device 1 includes: a character area detection section 21 for detecting a character area circumscribing each character from an image denoting a character string including a plurality of words denoted on a medium; a font determination section 23 for calculating first and second degrees of separation when a first distribution of an interval between the adjacent character areas and a second distribution of a distance between the centers of gravity of the character areas are respectively divided into two portions by determination analysis, and determining a font used for notation of the character string by comparing the first degree of separation with the second degree of separation; a threshold determination section 24 for setting a threshold for detecting a space between the words in accordance with the determined front; and a space detection section 25 for detecting the space between the words between the corresponding two characters when the interval between the character areas or the distance between the centers of gravity is equal to or more than the threshold.
