The present invention relates to an improved process for preparing green fatty acid methyl esters (fam; commonly called biodiesel) from different triglyceride oils using mixed metal oxides derived from double lamellar hydroxides (referred to herein as ldhs) as reusable solid heterogeneous basic catalysts. This process uses a low molar ratio of alcohol: oil and catalyst and / or the products are easily separable after reaction by simple physical processes. The biodiesel properties thus obtained reach the standard values for biodiesel and can be used directly as a transport fuel.
