The present invention describes a method for accurately identifying the presence of infections in papaya plants caused by the PRSV and/or the PapMV, thus removing the confusion that generates the description of the symptoms of the infected plants. An equipment of oligonucleotides corresponding to the PRSV, the PapMV and the papaya ß tubuline gene was designed for applying the same to the inventive diagnosis method by means of the reverse transcription reaction (RT) and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These oligonucleotides allow the two species of virus affecting papayas to be discriminated. The inclusion of the simultaneous amplification of the ß tubuline gene, which is of constitutive expression in the plant, is an important control in the negative samples for both viruses upon applying the inventive method.
