The invention relates to a method for the self-organised set-up and operation of a communication network (1) of a number of control devices (2) connected to one another in a data-transmitting manner. The control devices (2) are successively activated. After activation, in a broadcasting step, each control device (2) sends a broadcast message and waits, for a predefined time period, for a controller response of a controller control device (9). In a second step, a first control device (7) assumes the function of the controller control device (9) if the first control device (7) has not received a controller response within the predefined period of time. The controller control device (9) sends the controller response, if the controller control device (9) receives a broadcast message of another control device (2). After receiving the controller message, the other control device (2) exchanges operating messages exclusively via the controller control device (9).
