The invention relates to products that embody a PUF. A method of manufacturing such a product is disclosed that relies on a material having a surface with "deterministic" imperfections. The method further employs particles sized to be trapped by the unevenness of the surface. In general, the method allows particles (20) to randomly deposit on and be trapped on bumps (14) of the material surface (12) to provide a structure that will form the PUF. The resulting PUF is more easily readable because the general structure and position of the particles are known. Only the filling level (of a certain type) of the particles is random.
