A backpack 39 comprises a pair of shoulder straps 1R and 1L, a waist strap 5 and a plurality of LED arrays 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 which additionally may be located under high visibility fabric panels (2, Fig 1). The lights are configured onto the left and right hand sides of the backpack to allow non-motorised road users such as cyclists, equestrians, joggers and road maintenance personnel to signal their turning intentions to the other road users, improving road safety. Flashing LEDs are activated manually with an adjustable momentary switch affixed on the corresponding shoulder strap. When a user wishes to activate the right turn signal they press the right-hand side button with their hand or chin, e.g. whilst turning their head to see if the way is clear. By using the chin the user can keep both hands on the handle bars which enhances safe control of the bicycle.
